JAWA CZ Dealers

Dave Peach wrote to me recently in need of a cotton reel rear wheel spacer for his 638, which had been vandalised and set alight. Mick Berrill had none in stock and were “unlikely to get any from Czecho”. He asked “Do you know of any JAWA CZ dealers/breakers I might try”.

Why has that prompted an article? In the first place newer members should know that the UK dealer network were supplied with parts from 2 distributors – Mick Berrill and Hub Motorcycles in Bristol. Mick and Hub (which closed many years ago) were also dealers. Many dealers carried very limited stocks. They were happy to sell bikes but if you took one in for a repair there was often a wait while they obtained the parts needed from a distributor. I did hear some tales where a dealer would order one head and one base gasket, or even one piston ring! – just enough for the job in the workshop. I believe that the importers policy was that each approved dealer should hold £250 of stock but I do not think it was a rule they really enforced. One can understand that with parts in the post by return post from the distributor there was little need to spend money on stock to sit on a shelf. Let the distributor make that investment. Clearly there were notable exceptions like Kingstons in Nottingham who had supplied a fleet of bikes to Nottinghamshire Police and therefore kept a good supply of bits to keep them happy.

Given that it is now close on 10 years since any bikes were imported there are no longer any JAWA CZ dealers. Many bike shops have closed and most new ones would hardly dare work on a JAWA CZ and would probably not know where to get parts. Even if they could source from Mick Berrill there is no guarantee that the required bits are obtainable. Can you see a modern bike shop ordering from MZ Berlin – one of the few sources of bits?

The point I am trying to make is that there are no other JAWA CZ dealers I could point Dave towards. If Mick Berrill is unable to supply then you will probably have to try abroad. In this case Club Spares did have a second hand item for the huge sum of £2.00 including post and packing.

Members might know different?

Are there any UK bike shops you know who work on JAWA CZ machines? If so, please E-mail us and we can make a list. Pauline Ingram at Mick Berrill's might be able to offer some suggestions but I suspect the answer will be less than a handful exist.

Dave also asks about breakers. I know of none who keep JAWA CZ bikes and a friend who is a breaker says JAWA CZ parts never figure on the lists the breakers fax around. Again we ask – Do you know of any breaker who has JAWA CZ?  If so, please Email us.

Final Suggestions:

For parts urgently required, please contact Mick Berrill or MZ Berlin.

The cheapest spares are available from members – advertise in Torque, on our For Sale and Wanted pages or use JAWACHAT. If all else fails, try Club Spares.

Generic parts (plug leads, plugs, 6V bulbs etc) look at companies like Holden Vintage & Classic (Tel. 01885 488488).

None specialised parts like the 30x40x7 crankcase seal Norman Kinnish needed – local bearing supplier for about £2.00.
